At some point in everyone’s life there comes a time when we become restless and long for a change. Whether we’re looking back with nostalgia to the past and the road not taken – or to the future, hoping for a new horizon with which will produce endless adventures. There is no designated age for this restlessness, but it seems to be a fact of life for the “Baby Boomers.”
Perhaps this designation is what prompted my search for new paths to follow while I can still enjoy the trip!
A Baby Boomer, by definition is anyone who was born during the “baby boom,” following WWII and who grew up during the period between 1946 and 1964. The term is sometimes used in a cultural context but one distinct feature they have in common is that they tend to think of themselves as a special generation – very different from those who had come before – and certainly, after. According to statistics, this group travels extensively – whether retired or not – and they account for about 80% of all leisure travel.
Much as I like to think of myself as being “forever young” and ageless, (I can see family and friends shaking their heads) the sobering fact is that somewhere along the line, I’ve had to admit that I am a member of what I choose to consider an “elite group.”
So, I’ve decided to shift my travel focus accordingly.
Growing up abroad, combined with my years in the early 70s as a Pan Am stewardess (as we were called in those days) fueled the passion I already had for travel. Those wonderful airline years with the world as my playground offered a vast slate of travel stories (some of which, by necessity, must simply be filed away as some of my most “delicious” memories).
As a longtime resident of Mexico City raising a young family, my editorial slant had to do primarily with family travel. Consequently, my two daughters – who often accompanied me – were privy to experiences they will never forget as a result of my “job.”
As my children got older, my focus morphed into basic destination, luxury and romantic features. But now that I’m a grandmother, my travel focus is targeting Baby Boomers and I’ve decided to cover all of the above – along with some heartfelt philosophical words of wisdom – with a nod to my restless generation.
While I’m not happy about how quickly life is whizzing by, I have no choice but to embrace the freedom this designation affords me as I tour the world and report back to my fellow Restless Geezers.
I invite you to join me. It promises to be a great ride.
